DISCOVER FOOTBALL – Project 2020/2021

Strengthening women in and through football in Iraq/KRI

Since the beginning of 2021 DISCOVER FOOTBALL is runnig a 12-month leadership programme for women in football/futsal in Iraq/KRI. The programme is delivered via blended learning methods, with both in-person and online events

The aim of the programme is for participants to learn and strengthen their leadership skills, as well as applying them to their local sports contexts. Additionally, it aims to increase the participation of women and girls in sport and society in Iraq and KRI. The curriculum for the workshops was tailored to the needs of the group through a needs-analysis at the beginning of the year. Workshops included sessions on communication, leadership, resilience, gender-based discrimination, stakeholder analysis, networking and support structures. DISCOVER FOOTBALL is working with international experts in women’s football and around women’s rights to deliver the programme.

The main components of the project is a series of online workshops throughout 2021. Participants are learning and exchanging ideas in a series of online workshop sessions over the duration of the programme. They will apply their learning by collaborating, designing and implementing community sporting initiatives for women and girls.  In addition, they will then implement the knowledge they have acquired in the programme and independently organise small football events, so called Action Days, and implement them in November 2021 in Iraq/KRI.

This project consists of four phases:

  1. Needs-analysis, including an online survey (November 2020 - February 2021)
  2. Online leadership curriculum with 10 online sessions (January - December 2021)
  3. Conference in Berlin: football players and experts from Iraq/KRI and neighboring regions are invited to Berlin (October 2021)
  4. Action Days in Iraq/KRI (November 2021)
