For many women playing football is more than a just a sport. Playing football means to claim spaces in society that are usually reserved for men. Oftentimes, to stand up for the “right to play football” goes hand in hand with the commitment to women's rights, equality and against discrimination, which is also the case in the countries of Arab uprisings. In order to strengthen this commitment, this year's DISCOVER FOOTBALL has a manifold workshop program. Empowerment of women is not just the central subject of these workshops buts also their realization guideline: By the great majority the workshops are constituted as “women-only-spaces”. This gives the players the opportunity to get to know each other and to exchange their experiences with other players as well as with Berlin-based initiatives. Besides workshops on developing girls' football, on fostering women's rights and on challenging gender roles, one goal is to impart media literacy. Workshops on photography and digital storytelling do not only deal with transmitting skills, but also with a serious examination of identity and self-representation.

Here you can find the results of the workshop program.

 Football (not) for everybody?!

“Developing football at the grassroots-level!“ – who has the opportunity to play and who doesn’t, which dynamics and structures prevent some groups from playing football and how can we intervene? As a result of the  workshop, we would like to develop concrete terms of reference of how to broaden the work of barrier-free football initiatives for marginalized groups and women.

Feminism and Football

We all have two things in common: 1. we are women (in all their diversity) and 2. we fight for our right to play football! In many countries football is considered a male game and female players are not taken seriously. We
would like to come up with some common claims about what we expect of our societies, our families, our federations, our politicians etc.

Digital Storytelling

Learn how to tell your own story and create change in the world! In this workshop, we will create radio reports and short films about ourselves and our fight for the right to play. We‘ll celebrate our victories and document the
struggles. Develop your voice, learn how to use new media and have some fun!

Football with(out) Barriers

In this workshop we would like to train our self-awareness and discuss about every day experiences of discrimination (of women) on and off the pitch. How can we express our limits and redefine them? How can we as football players fight against discrimination and use our voices in order to be heard - in the very literal sense of the word - and stake our claim in public?

Discover Activist Photography

The participants learn about the basics of photography as a tool of empowerment and political/social commitment. The workshop covers issues such as prejudice, discrimination, women‘s rights and football and shows
how photography can influence these.

Identity in Photography

How can portraits and self-portraits communicate cultural identity? We will explore possible approaches to photographic representations of people. The production and the interpretation of photographs are complex processes.
The workshop teaches basic technical knowledge in digital photography, knowledge of portrait photography, composition of a photo and how to create a visual tension.

Discover Activist Photography

Identity in Photography

Digital Storytelling

Learn how to tell you own story and create change in the world! In this workshop, we will create radio reports and short films about ourselves and our fight for the right to play. Each participant will write and record her own story. We'll celebrate our victories and and document the struggles. Develop your voice, learn how to use new media and have some fun!
