Step Up Equality

 DISCOVER FOOTBALL – Project 2019 – 2021

Women continue to be largely excluded from sports decision-making and leadership, including at grassroots level. Structural barriers caused by discriminatory norms, values and institutional practices in the world of sport continue to limit women’s options and opportunities. This also applies to the cultural context of sport and the legacy of many years of lack of efforts to promote women in leadership positions.

The following overviews are the result of the Step Up Equality project which was an important project for DISCOVER FOOTBALL from 2019 to 2022. The aim of the project was to combat the persistent gender inequalities in sport and to address the under-representation of women among trainers, managers and decision-makers in sport.

The study aimed to address the lack or poor availability of data and independent studies on inequalities and discrimination in sport, particularly on the role of women in training or decision-making. With the SUE project we aimed to identify the most relevant difficulties and challenges for women in sport in Europe that make it difficult or impossible for them to access positions as trainers or managers.
